Weigela - French Lace?

French Lace? Weigela, weigela florida ‘Brigela’ (PP12,666), is a new weigela that has abundant amounts of ruby-red flowers blooming in summer amongst the variegated yellow and green foliage. This weigela is a real stand-out in the garden, and has an awesome effect when planted in mass. It forms a rounded shrub that grows 4-5 feet tall and as wide. This large upright form makes an ideal high profile accent plant. It is equally suited for the background of perennial beds or to cloak unattractive fence lines. French Lace Weigela is also good as a shrub border, foundation or specimen plant. A deciduous shrub, it requires full sun. One should follow a regular watering schedule during the first growing season to establish a deep, extensive root system. For a formal appearance, shear annually after flowering.

Weigela - Carnaval

Carnaval Weigela, weigela florida ‘Courtalor’, is a beautiful shrub that produces multitudes of pink flower buds that open into shades of red, white and pink trumpet-shaped flowers. The glossy deep green leaves are heavily textured. Carnaval is an extremely showy landscape plant with a growth that measures 4-5 feet tall and 3-5 feet wide. Slowly prune the down growing branches, and it will vigorously grow upright. Carnaval is a grower favorite because it is easy to plant, easy to maintain, and easy to enjoy! It likes sandy, well drained soil under almost any conditions. It can be planted as a specimen, hedge or in groupings planted 3 feet apart. It grows best in a sunny location with moist soil. This weigela tolerates some drought.

Wentworth American Cranberrybush, viburnum trilobum ‘Wentworth’, is a heavy fruiting, upright form of American Viburnum with white flowers in the spring, and then producing large red fruits that are excellent tasting and good for making preserves. Its dark green foliage turns a beautiful red in autumn. This cranberrybush is rounded in form, fairly dense and grows 10-12 feet tall and as wide. It is an excellent choice for screening, informal hedging, small masses, and borders. It requires part shade to full sun and prefers sandy loam to some clay, but does best on well-drained sites with better than average moisture.

Watanabei Doublefile Viburnum, viburnum plicatum tomentosum ‘Watanabei’, displays elegant white flowers that bloom continuously through the season just above the horizontal tiered branches. The snow-white blooms are breathtaking in spring and, in the South, appear sporadically throughout the growing season. The dark green foliage turns a beautiful red-purple in the fall. Its compact slow growing habit makes it a great accent plant. Watanabei Doublefile can be planted as a specimen plant, massed group, or a shrub border. It grows well in many exposures and soils, but does best in full sun with moderate moisture and well-drained soils. It does require some light shade in more southern areas. It grows 4-6 feet high and as wide. Viburnum are one of the most outstanding group of shrubs for use in the landscape planting because they are hardy and resistant to serious pests.

Redwing? American Cranberrybush, ‘Viburnum trilobum ‘J. N. Select’, has something for every season. The spring foliage has a reddish tint. White flowers appear in mid May, followed by persistent bright red fruit. The fall color is a stunning brilliant red with a very impressive berry display. Redwing has a densely branched upright form, good growth rate and attractive, red-tinted new foliage. It requires full sun to partial shade; moist, well-drained soil is best, but is tolerant of wet soils; also tolerant of alkaline soils. This upright, round shaped shrub grows 8-10 feet tall and 6-8 wide. Redwing offers something of interest all year and its dense foliage makes a nice hedge. It is an excellent plant for screening and informal hedging. What a great flower, fruit, and foliage! This plant is attractive to bees, butterflies and/or birds.

Red Feather? Arrowwood Viburnum, viburnum dentatum ‘JN Select’, has a two tone new growth. The maroon and green give this shrub its name. As the new foliage ages, green veins appear on the red surfaces, giving the leaves a colorful, feather-like design. Red Feather has an outstanding, long lasting, maroon fall color, and its autumn color is consistent from year to year. White flowers appear in June, followed by blue-back berries in the fall. It prefers loamy, well-drained soil but tolerates dry conditions, sun or part shade and grows 8-10 feet tall and 10-12 feet in width. This viburnum is very easy to grow and is useful for its extreme durability in borders, screens, parking lots, and mass plantings. Viburnum tend to be multi-season plants with ornamental value throughout a large part of the season.

Red fruit comes later in the season and proceeds the spectacular red-purple fall foliage. The most striking aspect of this shrub is it’s double rows of lacey cymes. It is a horizontally branched shrub that requires full sun to partial shade; moist, well drained soil is best, but can tolerate some clay. Pink Beauty grows 5-8 feet tall and 4-6 feet wide. Onondaga Viburnum, viburnum sargentii ‘Onondaga’, has young velvety foliage that is dark maroon, maturing to deep green with a purple tinge. The creamy white flat-topped flowers are 5″ across with maroon centers. It produces sparse small red fruits. It makes a great screen or shrub border plant. This multistemmed shrub reaching 6 feet tall and is as wide. It requires full sun to full shade and prefers moist, well-drained soils of average fertility in full sun. It requires more watering than most viburnum. Onondaga is an excellent multi-season interest flowering shrub. This plant is attractive to bees, butterflies and/or birds.
